Sarong Kebaya: Peranakan Fashion in an interconneted world 1500-1950
As world travel and mutate between cultures, as they have over the centuries across the Indian Ocean, they leave significants trails. Charting these journeys can ecucidate. Peranakan dress. For over a millenium, conquerors, merchants, and missionaries from diffrent parts of the world traversed this vas region, leaving a rich legacy of encounter and exchange. Three key terms for peranakan womens dress are now part of the Malay language, but they have complex histories which represent the historical problems posed by the garments themselves: baju, a generic world for clothing or any kind of upper garment;kebaya, which in contemporary language de notes an open blouse fastened by brooches or pins;and sarong, the ankle-lenght tube skitt wrapped around the waist.
